Handyman Fulham drilling a timber board for a repair job
Local handyman for Shepherd's Bush

Based in Fulham, working across W12

Handyman Fulham is based at Jerdan Place in SW6. Shepherd's Bush is in the same borough, Hammersmith and Fulham, so we deal with the same council and the same conservation guidance here as at home. There is no separate office in W12. We come up by road, and our own handyman does the work.

The council has several conservation areas in and around Shepherd's Bush, including Shepherds Bush itself, Coningham and Lime Grove, Wood Lane, and Old Oak and Wormholt.

Old cottages near the green

Some of the oldest homes here are on Shepherds Bush Place, a Grade II listed row that Historic England says was reputedly built around 1822. They are two storey houses in yellow stock brick, mostly with slate roofs, and their sash windows sit back under shallow brick arches.

Small houses like these need gentle work. Sashes stick, cords snap, and the bottom of the window frame gets soft where water sits on the sill. Because the row is listed, the aim is always to repair the timber that is there, not swap it for something modern.

The Old Oak and Wormholt cottage estates

In the north of the area, a lot of the housing was built by the London County Council. The council bought the Old Oak land in 1905 and built the estate in two phases, 1912 to 1913 and 1920 to 1923. The Wormholt Estate followed in 1926 to 1928. These are cottage style homes in pairs and short terraces, with red tiled roofs, small paned timber windows, panelled doors and recessed porches.

Hammersmith and Fulham's design guidelines for the area are practical. They say damaged wooden frames should be repaired with new wooden parts where possible, that frames should be painted white, and that uPVC and aluminium are not in keeping. They also say recessed porches should not be closed in. In the core of the conservation area an Article 4 Direction applies, which means planning permission is needed for changes to windows, doors and porches that would normally be allowed.

Our handyman in Shepherd's Bush: the jobs we see most

On the cottage estates, timber window repairs, door easing and fresh paint on frames and doors are the steady work. Privet hedges and small front gardens are part of the look, so gate repairs and low fence fixes come up too.

In the older terraces and the flats across W12, the list is more indoor. Think doors that have dropped on their hinges, wobbly kitchen units, curtain poles and blinds, TV brackets, and new silicone around a bath. Renters often need help getting a flat ready to hand back, and landlords want small repairs done between tenants.

We are also honest about what is not a handyman job. We never do gas work ourselves. Any gas work is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, as the law requires. We will arrange this for you. A new circuit, a new consumer unit (the fuse box) or new points in a room with a bath or shower is done by a registered electrician who can self certify the work. We arrange it.

Landlords and rental flats in W12

If you let a property here, remember that landlords must have the electrics inspected and tested at least every five years by a qualified person, according to government guidance. We do not carry out that inspection, but we can fix the small items that come up in between, like a loose socket faceplate, a sticking door or a dripping tap.

End of tenancy work is usually a mix: filling and touching up walls, rehanging a wardrobe door, resealing the shower and replacing broken blinds. Listing it all in one quote request lets us plan it as a single visit.

Common questions

Can I replace my Old Oak estate windows with uPVC?

The council's design guidelines say uPVC and aluminium frames are not in keeping, and an Article 4 Direction covers windows in the core area. We repair timber frames and suggest you check with the council before any replacement.

Can you enclose my recessed porch?

We would advise against it on the Old Oak and Wormholt estates. The council's guidelines say recessed porches are a feature of the area and enclosing them should be avoided.

Do you cover the whole of W12?

Yes. We are based in Fulham and come up to Shepherd's Bush, from the streets near the green to the cottage estates in the north.

I am moving out of a rented flat. Can you do the small repairs?

Yes. Common jobs are filling screw holes, touching up paint, resealing the bath and fixing loose handles. Send us a list and photos and we will quote for it as one job.

Do you do landlord electrical safety checks?

No. That inspection must be done by a qualified person, usually an electrician. We can fix small issues in between, and arrange a registered electrician for bigger work.

My front door on a cottage estate house is sticking. Can you help?

Yes. Timber doors often swell or drop. We plane, adjust hinges and repaint the bare edge so it does not soak up water again.
