We are a handyman in Earl's Court, working across SW5 from our base just down the road at Jerdan Place in Fulham. Fulham based, a short trip to SW5

Handyman Fulham is based at Jerdan Place in SW6, which is very close to Earl's Court. We do not have an office in SW5 itself, but it is a short trip up the road for us, and our handyman knows these buildings well.

Earl's Court is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The council has several conservation areas here, including Earl's Court Square, Earl's Court Village, Nevern Square, Philbeach and Courtfield.

Terraces, mansion blocks and a few cottages

The Earl's Court Square appraisal sets out how quickly the area was built. Semi detached villas on Earl's Court Road came first in 1872 and 1873. Terraces on Penywern Road, Warwick Road and three sides of Earl's Court Square followed between 1873 and 1878, then red brick terraces in the late 1880s and mansion blocks in the 1890s, such as Langham Mansions.

Earl's Court Village is older and smaller in scale. Cottages on Kenway Road and Hogarth Place go back to the early 1800s, and modest two storey terraces, some over a lower ground floor, were built in the 1850s and 1860s on streets like Child's Street and Wallgrave Road. Grand Italianate terraces arrived on Hogarth Road and Knaresborough Place in the 1870s.

The council notes that some big terraces were turned into hotels or flats over the years. That history is behind many of the flats we are asked to work in today.

Handyman in Earl's Court: the jobs and why they come up

Sash windows are everywhere. The appraisals describe timber sliding sashes, often one pane over one on the bigger terraces. In tall rooms, these heavy sashes wear out their cords and pulleys, and once a cord goes the window either drops or will not stay open. Replacing cords and easing the sash is one of the most common jobs we quote for in SW5.

Flats carved from larger houses often have small bathrooms, some with no window at all. Mould on silicone, loose tiles and tired extractor fans follow. Resealing the bath and shower, regrouting and cleaning back mould before repainting is routine work here.

Doors are another regular. When a big house is split, new partition walls and fire doors go in, and over time they catch, drop or stop closing properly. Our handyman spends a fair bit of time planing, adjusting closers and refitting latches.

Railings, lightwells and the front of the building

The council describes black painted railings as a strong and unifying feature of Earl's Court Square. In Earl's Court Village, lightwells with stone steps and iron railings are part of the street. A lightwell is the open space in front of a basement window that lets daylight in.

Lightwells collect leaves and rubbish, and drains at the bottom block. Clearing them and keeping railings painted stops water standing against the basement wall. The appraisal also warns that security bars over lower ground windows can look intrusive if they are not designed with care, so if you want more security we can talk through options that are less visible.

For landlords and managing agents

Landlord work is a regular part of what we are asked to do in SW5. Government guidance says landlords must have their electrical installations inspected and tested at least every five years by a qualified person. We do not do that test, but we can fix small faults in between. Bigger electrical work is done by a registered electrician who can self certify the work, and we arrange it. Any gas checks and gas repairs are done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we will arrange this for you.

Between tenants we can clear a list in one visit: filling and painting, resealing, fixing loose handles and hinges, replacing blinds and making good after old fixings. Shared parts like hallways and stairs in converted houses also need touching up from time to time.

Common questions

How close are you to Earl's Court?

Very close. We are based in Fulham, SW6, next door to SW5, and cover Earl's Court as one of our main nearby areas.

My sash window will not stay open. Can you fix it?

Usually the cord has snapped or slipped off the pulley. We open up the frame, fit new cords and rebalance the sash so it stays where you put it.

Can you deal with mould in a small bathroom?

Yes. We clean off the mould, replace stained silicone and can check the extractor fan. If the fan needs new wiring, a registered electrician does that part, and we arrange it.

Do you work for managing agents?

Yes. We can quote for repairs in flats and in shared areas like hallways and stairs. Send the details through the quote form with access arrangements.

Do you carry out EICRs for landlords?

No. An electrical installation condition report must be done by a qualified person, normally an electrician. We handle the small repairs around it.

Can you paint the railings outside my building?

Yes, at ground and lightwell level. The council sees black railings as an important part of the area, so we repaint in black.

Is a fire door repair a handyman job?

Easing a catching door or adjusting a closer is. If a fire door needs replacing, or seals and certification are involved, we will tell you and suggest the right specialist.
