From Fulham to W4
Handyman Fulham works from Jerdan Place in SW6. We do not have a Chiswick office, but W4 is one of the areas we cover, a short run west through Hammersmith. Our own handyman comes over and does the job.
Chiswick is in the London Borough of Hounslow, not Hammersmith and Fulham, so the planning team and conservation guidance are different from ours. Hounslow lists several conservation areas here, including Bedford Park, Turnham Green, Strand on the Green, Old Chiswick, Chiswick House, Chiswick High Road, Stamford Brook and Grove Park.
Bedford Park and its red brick houses
Bedford Park was built in phases from 1875. The developer was Jonathan Carr, and Richard Norman Shaw became the main architect from 1877, setting the look that later builders copied. The style is known as Queen Anne Revival: red brick, hanging clay tiles on the walls, white painted timber windows, steep roofs, tall gables and dormers.
The estate is split between two councils, with Ealing on the west side and Hounslow on the east, along Woodstock Road. Ealing's appraisal calls poor window and door replacements a major concern, and it also flags front gardens paved over for cars.
For a handyman this means a lot of timber. Painted casements and sashes, small pane glazing, timber porches and decorative fences all need regular rubbing down, filling and painting. Loose roof and wall tiles are worth spotting early, though anything above first floor level needs proper access.

Strand on the Green and the riverside
Down by the Thames, Strand on the Green is a ribbon of 18th and early 19th century houses, fishermen's cottages and pubs, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces behind. Hounslow's appraisal dates Ship Cottage to 1694. It also says the Strand floods at spring tides.
Hounslow says historic timber windows here can often be repaired rather than replaced, and it does not recommend uPVC. We agree with that approach. Cottage windows and doors facing the river take a lot of weather, and rot at the bottom rail of a sash or door is common. Cutting out the bad section and splicing in new timber keeps the original frame.
Our handyman around Turnham Green
The Turnham Green area is more mixed. Heathfield Terrace is an early 19th century stucco row, there are Victorian villa pairs facing the green, and the Edwardian Arlington Park Mansions sit alongside 1930s mansion blocks such as Watchfield Court. That gives us houses and flats in the same few streets.
In the mansion blocks, typical requests are door adjustments, kitchen cupboard repairs, shelving, curtain poles on high ceilings and TV mounting. In the houses, it is more often sash cords, garden fences and gutters. Hounslow's appraisal also names the loss of front gardens to parking as a threat to this area, so if you want to rebuild a front wall or fix a gate, we can do it in a way that keeps the boundary.
Older homes and safe working
Almost every house in these conservation areas was built long before 2000, and the HSE says asbestos can be found in any building of that age. Before drilling into old boxing, textured ceilings or flue panels, our handyman checks, and if something looks suspect we stop and suggest a survey.
Any gas work is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, as the law requires. We will arrange this for you. A new circuit, a new consumer unit (the fuse box) or new points in a room with a bath or shower is done by a registered electrician who can self certify the work. We arrange it. We can still change a light fitting on an existing circuit, swap a socket faceplate like for like or fit a battery doorbell.

Common questions
Do you cover the Ealing side of Bedford Park too?
Yes, we cover the whole estate. Just note that the west side falls under Ealing and the east side under Hounslow, so any planning questions go to the right council.
Can you repair rotten timber windows on a riverside cottage?
Often, yes. Rot at the bottom of a sash or door can usually be cut out and new timber spliced in. Hounslow's own guidance says historic timber windows can often be repaired rather than replaced.
Will you fit uPVC windows in a Chiswick conservation area?
No. Hounslow does not recommend uPVC in its Strand on the Green and Turnham Green appraisals, and we focus on timber repair.
My Bedford Park porch is flaking and soft in places. Is that a handyman job?
Usually. We can scrape back, treat soft spots, fill or replace small sections and repaint. If the frame holding up the porch roof is badly rotten, we will tell you before going further.
Do you have an office in Chiswick?
No. We are based in Fulham and come over to Chiswick, Hammersmith and other nearby areas from there. The handyman who quotes is the one who does the work.
Can you clear gutters on a three storey house?
Gutters at that height need scaffold or a safe access platform. We will tell you honestly what access is needed, and handle the job ourselves only where it can be done safely.
How do I ask for a quote in W4?
